Hey there, welcome to Living A Boss Life, I’m Jenn Summers. As a coach, I focus on mindset and how it attributes to everything we do. I have coined the term COVID-19 FEARS Pandemic for the purpose of explaining how people’s reactions are worsening the situation. And why we need to fight the fear pandemic to survive the actual COVID-19 Pandemic at hand.

First, let’s start with overcoming the long gruelling days of isolation.

Time is perspective.

Time is all about a feeling. So when we are doing something that we love to do, time flies! But if we are doing something that challenges us (even our emotions) it feels like time is at a standstill and lasts forever!

For example: working on a term paper that you have been procrastinating for ages until the very last minute. Every minute you sit there staring at that paper, wishing you did not have to do it and trying to think of excuses to get out of it feels an eternity in time.

However, if you were to be out on a date with friends or a loved one how many times have you looked at the time only to see that hours had gone by in the blink of an eye.

Hence, time being perspective. When we change our mindset we change perspective.

Why Self-Isolation/Quarantine triggers your mindset to drag the perspective of time?

The very thought of isolation/quarantine can invoke negativity and once negativity sets in so do the gruelling hours that await our new perspective.

Our mindset shift gears and allows fear and other emotions to set in. Anxiety can make things even that much more difficult. It is difficult to remain positive when we are facing fears of uncertainty.

We can help each other through this.

I want to help you get through this! Therefore I want to share some insights and tips to help us all transition through changes brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Are you consumed by fear? Is your anxiety about COVID-19 high?

It is totally normal to be feeling fear right now. We are all human beings being faced with uncertainty and an instinct to survive. Fear invokes more fear. Panic invokes more panic. Emotions spread to those around us.

Fear is not always a bad thing. Fear protects us from potential harm and ensures we are safe. Fear makes us react in a way to protect ourselves and our loved ones. Without fear, we would not know when to keep ourselves safe from potential harm.

When we shop and prepare to isolate or quarantine our fear drives us to do so in order to protect our wellbeing. Our fear, in this case, is helpful and ignites our survival instincts. Some people instincts are more sensitive and sometimes our fear can get out of control.

Explaining The COVID-19 Panic Shopping Crisis

As we all know there are people who are shopping and buying everything in sight (the $200+ supply of tp peeps). They are shopping with a sense of loss of control of their fear. Their fear has overcome them and they cannot control it.

Their survival instinct from uncontrolled fear has gone into overdrive and feelings of hoarding and greed set in. They lose compassion for others outside their immediate realm of life, if only briefly, while they prepare for the worst their mindest persona tells them is coming.

Their natural instinct to survive is more powerful than their logical thinking at this time. It consumes them in its entirety.

We are all only human

This does not make them a bad person. It makes them human, a human who has lost control of their fear. And all though it may be very upsetting and blow your mind, we need to remember they lost control.

How to stop the spread of COVID-19 FEARS pandemic…

It is of vital importance for us to work together and support one another (from afar albeit). Together we can stop the spread of the COVID-19 Fears Pandemic which is a very real thing.

Be on the lookout for the COVID-19 Fear spreading to you

Heck, you may go to the store having no sense of panic whatsoever, only to see bare shelves all around you and the next thing you know you are feeling uncontrollable fear too!

This, in turn, may cause you to feel a need to buy everything that remains on the shelves.

We are human, our instinct is to survive!

Your fight or flight kicks into overdrive. Your will to protect yourself and your loved ones, now triggered.

What emotions do you feel at this moment?

  • are you scared?
  • are you sad?
  • are you angry?
  • do you feel panic?

As I stood in the store surrounded by empty shelves knowing some basic necessities we would not be able to obtain during this time I felt sadness. Sadness because our world is so scared. Sad because there are people out there who need these items.

And I felt a twinge of anger. Ok, maybe a twang of anger!

Anger towards those buying everything in sight. Anger that we were not as prepared as we should have been. Angered at the stores for not limiting items. Angry because of panic shopping creating even more panic. Angry because I had no sense of control.

But I do not know their story. Maybe they are buying for their neighbours, the elderly family members, for elderly neighbours or Immunocompromised neighbours.

Use empathy over judgment.

I do not know so I have no place to judge.

And even if I did know what good is it doing me?

Does it change anything for my wellbeing?

Does the anger and sadness or disbelief put food on the table or essentials in the pantry?

Does my getting upset do any good for my family and me?

No, it does not!

It is of vital importance for us to work together and support one another (from afar albeit). Together we can stop the spread of the COVID-19 Fears Pandemic which is a very real thing.

We CAN control how we react to the COVID-19 Fear Pandemic

Honestly, how angry would you be if you went to the store on a payday, any other time than during the COVID-19 pandemic, and all the toilette paper was sold out at your local store?

  • Would you be ‘post it on social media’ mad?
  • Would you be ‘attack the person’ mad?
  • Would you be ‘tell everyone you know’ mad?
  • Would you be ‘my entire day is ruined’ mad?

Probably not. It just wouldn’t seem rational to be upset, right?

We probably would not care all that much and would not raise any red flags. We most likely would shrug it off and move on with our day.

So why are we so upset by it now?

Because our instinct in relation to our own fear is to protect ourselves and although the toilette paper really means nothing to our survival, we are pissed off!

And rightfully so, after all, it just triggered OUR sense of fear!

Sigh, the toilette paper crisis of 2020. Or as I have been thinking of it a factor in the COVID-19 FEARS Pandemic.

Sometimes the fears of the things we cannot control make the entire situation that much worse.

We are engaged in a movement of panic and releasing steam by venting with others who also cannot find toilette paper helps us to meet on common ground. It helps us to relate to one another for social bonding needs. Needs that need to be met for us to feel we belong.

I honestly wonder how many people would have started hoarding toilette paper if it was not made to be public knowledge.

If the first time a store ran out of tp and no one noticed, do you think everyone would have made a mad dash for toilette paper?

The panic shopping came from fear spreading like wildfire.

It all started from spreading the word just like the virus itself is spreading. What’s worse is that fear can make people do things that actually may put them in danger.

As we are Self-isolated (or quarantined) and alone facing fears, we need that social interaction. And social media is where to find it.

I’m not saying bitching about toilette paper is a bad thing, all the power to you! Heck, I was bitching about tp too and that was prior to our State of Emergency here in Saskatchewan.

Examples of The COVID-19 FEARS Pandemic putting people in harm’s way:

  • People physically fighting over toilette paper.
  • Stores being overrun with people.
  • Tensions high and abuse towards others (mentally, verbally)

This COVID-19 FEARS pandemic, in turn, is putting us at risk of spreading the actual virus much more than it would if we were able to think with a rational mind.

We are now in more contact with others which is exactly what they are telling us not to do.

  • Physical altercations defeat the social distancing rule.
  • Swarming stores eliminates the ability to social distance.
  • Lack of basic necessities and supplies cripples our ability to remain healthy.
  • Stress sets in causing our immune system to react in defence mode.

Handling how much fear you have can be difficult and challenging to control.

I’m sure all these people did not set out to lose their control of the fear. It is human nature to react this way so please remember that.

Coping Strategies for the COVID-19 FEARS Pandemic

I want to leave you with a few tips today to help you feel some sense of relief even if it is just the slightest.

Practice self-care- do something that makes you feel good that you are caring for your mind and your body.

A Gratitude Journal– write down something positive that happened today or something you are grateful for.

Right now is a great time to start a new routine and journaling is great for the mind. Our world right now is filled with chaos and change by adding in a new routine is much easier when we are faced with the necessity to change our day to day habits.

Meditation– Meditation for 5-20 minutes a day is a great way to give your mind some time to just escape the events going on in the outside world. There are many great meditations on you-tube or podcasts too.

Meditation is great for kids too! This is also a great opportunity to try out some family yoga at home!

Venting– As I mentioned above, venting to someone helps us by giving us social interaction and to blow off steam! However, there are things we can learn about venting and how to do it the right way.

Express how you FEEL, rather than discussing “what is happening”. Remember that we have no control over what is happening outside of our realm or of other people's thoughts.

How to vent in a healthy way!

Express how you FEEL, rather than discussing “what is happening”. Remember that we have no control over what is happening outside of our realm or of other people’s thoughts.

By expressing the emotions that you are feeling towards the situation, you are then releasing them instead of bottling them up inside and allowing them to control you!

When we talk about our feelings we acknowledge them and through acknowledgement, we can then take back the control of our emotions.

This is not something that can be easily done but with practice, we can achieve this with great success.

Ask yourself a few questions:

  • is this fear rational?
  • what feeling is the most powerful and consuming?
  • what feeling do I want to have instead?
  • what can I do to feel that feeling I desire?

Take This Time To Form New Habits

As I mentioned above, as well, now is a great time to change our habits. Our routines have changed dramatically and life has become unlike we have known it for many of us. During dramatic changes like this, we are more inclined to knock out bad habits and replace them with new fruitful ones.

Are there things you always wanted to learn but never had the chance? Perhaps a new language or a new skill.

Is there a hobby you feel passionate about but never have the time to do? Perhaps you can get back into it now with the newly designated time you have on hand.

Have you ever wanted to start your own business but feared you did not have the time to do what it takes? Perhaps you can devote the time to it now.

Do you have a goal you haven’t had time to focus on? Perhaps now you can make an action plan to crush your goals!
